My age was 1/3 of my fathers' age 18 years ago. Now my fathers' age is twice as my age. What is my age now?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
For me, this formulation does not seem to be perfect. Much better is this:
18 years ago, my age was 1/3 of my fathers' age. Now my fathers' age is twice as my age. What is my age now?
The solution below corresponds to this formulation.
Let M be my age now.
Then my father's present age is 2M.
18 years ago
M - 18 = .
To solve it, multiply both sides by 3. You will get
3M - 54 = 2M - 18,
3M - 2M = 54 - 18,
M = 36.
Answer. My present age is 36 years.
