Randy is three times as old as his brother Ben
R = 3B.........Eq(1)
six years ago the sum of their ages is the same
as Randy's present age.
R - 6 + B - 6 = 3B........Eq(2)
Replace R in Eq(2) with 3B from Eq(1)
3B - 6 + B - 6 = 3B
Collect like terms
3B - 3B + B = 6 + 6
B = 12
Randy is 36 years old
Brother is 12 years old.
