a man is 22 years older than his son. in 8 years, the sum of their ages will be 102. how old is each?


Son's age now = S
Man's age now = S+22
Son's age in 8 years = S+8
Man's age in 8 years = (S+22)+8

 in 8 years, the sum of their ages will be 102.

 
    |     |    |     |   |
(S+22)+8  +   S+8    =  102


        (S+22)+8+S+8 = 102
         
You solve that for S, the son's age now, then
add 22 to find the age of the father.
