Let n be the number of years until a 44-year old father (12+32) is 3 times older than his 12-year old child. Then:
44+n=3(12+n)
44+n=36+3n
2n=8
n=4
In 4 years, the father will be 48; and the child 16-making the father 3 times older than the child. ☺☺☺☺
