Jack is 4 times as old as Lacy.
J = 4L
10 years ago...
10 years ago Jack was J-10
10 years ago Lacy was L-10
...the sum of their ages was 40.
J-10 + L-10 = 40 

Simplify that and substitute 4L for J,
then solve the equation for L. That will be
Lacy's age. Then Substitute what you get for 
L in J = 4L to find Jack's age.
