y=son's age
x+y=64
(x+4)=3.5 (y+4). Both ages increase by 4.
x=3.5(y+4)-4=3.5 y+14-4
x=3.5 y+10
substitute into the first equation above
3.5 y+10+y=64
4.5 y=54=(9/2)y
multiply both sides by 2
9y=108
y=12
the son is 12 years old
the mother is 52 years old
in 4 years, he will be 16 and she 56. 56 is 3.5 times 16
