Sam is 5 years older than Beth. In 2 years, Sam will be two times the age of Beth. How old is Sam?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Let S be Sam's present age, B be Beth's present age.
Then
S = B + 5, (1) ( "Sam is 5 years older than Beth")
S + 2 = 2*(B+2). (2) ( "In 2 years, Sam will be two times the age of Beth")
To solve this system, substitute the expression S = B+5 of (1) into equation (2). You will get
(B+5) + 2 = 2*(B+2).
Now simplify and solve this equation for B:
B + 7 = 2B + 4,
7 - 4 = 2B - B,
3 = B.
Answer. Beth is 3 years old, Sam is B + 5 = 3 + 5 = 8 years old.
