Let John's and Shane's ages, be J, and S, respectively

Then 6 years ago, we had: J + S - 2(6) = 13

J + S - 12 = 13

J + S = 13 + 12

J + S = 25

In 8 years, sum of ages, or J + S + 2(8), or J + S + 16

Since J + S = 25, then J + S + 16 becomes: 25 + 16, or
