Answer by fractalier(6550)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Call their ages, f and j. We can then write
3f + 4j = 71
f = 2j - 3
Now substitute the second one into the first one...we get...
3(2j - 3) + 4j = 71
6j - 9 + 4j = 71
10j = 80
j = 8
f = 2(8) - 3 = 13
