6 years ago, Edwin was 2 years less than thrice as old his son Nj.
e - 6 = 3(n-6) - 2
e - 6 = 3n - 18 - 2
e = 3n - 18 - 2 + 6
e = 3n - 14

n + 17 = (e + 17) - 3
multiply both sides by 2 to get rid of the fracton
2(n+17) = e + 17 - 2(3)
2n + 34 = e + 17 - 6
2n = e + 17 - 6 - 34
2n = e - 23
replace e with (3n-14), from the 1st statement
2n = 3n - 14 - 23
2n - 3n = -37
-n = -37
therefore
n = 37 is the son's present age
He was born: 2016 - 37 = 1979
