The ratio from Sam's age to Jim's age is 7:10.
+
10S = 7J
S = J
S = .7J
Twelve years ago Jim was twice as old as Sam.
J - 12 = 2(S - 12)
J - 12 = 2S - 24
J = 2S - 24 + 12
J = 2S - 12
Replace S with .7J
J = 2(.7J) - 12
J = 1.4J - 12
12 = 1.4J - J
12 = .4J
J = 12/.4
J = 30 yrs is Jim's present age
then
S = .7(30)
S = 21 yrs is Sam's present age

What will be the ratio of Sam's age to Jim's age 9 years from now?
