Jun-Pei is twice as old as her friend, Pristine. Pristine is 5 years older than Ashley. In 5 years, Jun-Pei will be three times as old as Ashley. How old is Pristine now?

Set J = age of Jun-Pei
Set P = age of Pristine
Set A = age of Ashley
J = 2P
P = A + 5
J + 5 = 3A
Since J = 2P
divide each side by 2
J/2 = P
Since P = A + 5
J/2 = A + 5
multiply each side by 2
J = 2A + 10
Substitute 2A + 10 for J in J + 5 = 3A
( 2A + 10 ) + 5 = 3A
2A + 15 = 3A
add -2A to each side
15 = A
Since J = 2A + 10
J = 2*15 + 10
J = 40
Since P = J/2
P = 40/2
P = 20
So A = 15 , P = 20 and J = 40
