Question 1020230: Tom's age is 75% of Gerry's age. In 6 years , he will be 80% of Gerry's age. Find tom's age now?

Let t = Tom's age now, and g = Gerry's age now.
Then from the first sentence we get
t = 0.75g (Equation A)
From the second sentence, we get
t + 6 = 0.80(g+6) (Equation B)
substituting Eqn.A into Eqn.B, we obtain
0.75g + 6 = 0.80(g+6)
==> 0.75g + 6 = 0.80g + 4.8
==> 1.2 = 0.05g
==> g = 1.2/0.05 = 24, Gerry's age now
==> t = 0.75*24 = , Tom's age now.
