Let's call the son's age x. Now the father is 24 plus the age of his son:
24+x = 3x subtract x on both sides
24 = 2x flip the equation around, it looks better:
2x = 24 now divide both sides by 2
x = 12 is the son's age. And the father is:
12+24 = 36
And the son's age times 3:
12*3 = 36 we have the correct answer
