Melissa is 23 years older than her daughter maria.
Ml = 23 + Ma.....(1)
In 6 years melissa will be twice as old as maria.
Ml + 6 = 2(Ma + 6)......(2)
Replace Ml in Equation (2) with (23 + Ma) from
Equation (1)
(23 + Ma) + 6 = 2(Ma + 6)
23 + Ma + 6 = 2Ma + 12
Collect like terms:
Ma - 2Ma = 12 - 29
-Ma = - 17
Ma = 17
Melissa is currently 40 years old
Maria is currently 17 years old
