There are 32,000 fans at a football game. The total of ticket sales was #272,000. How many fans paid for reserved tickets for $14 and how many got general adission for $6.00 a ticket?
Answer by Mathtut(512) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
lets call the number of $6 tickets x and the number of $14 tickets y.
:
x+y=32000.....eq 1---->x=32000-y
6x+14y=272000.eq 2
:
take x's value from eq 1 and plug it into eq 2
:
6(32000-y)+14y=272000
:
192000-6y+14y=272000
:
8y=80000
:
highlight(y=10000) number of $14 tickets
:
highlight(x=32000-10000=22000)number of $6 tickets

Answer by jim_thompson5910(9368) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x=# of reserved tickets and y = # of general admission tickets

Total number of people equation:
"There are 32,000 fans at a football game" -----> x+y=32000

Total Revenue equation:
"The total of ticket sales was #272,000" and "reserved tickets for $14 and how many got general adission for $6.00" translates to 14x+6y=272000

So we have the system of equations:

system(x+y=32000,14x+6y=272000)

Now in order to solve this system by using substitution, we need to solve (or isolate) one variable. I'm going to solve for y.

So let's isolate y in the first equation

x+y=32000 Start with the first equation

y=32000-x Subtract x from both sides

y=-x+32000 Rearrange the equation

---------------------

Since y=-x+32000, we can now replace each y in the second equation with -x+32000 to solve for x

14x+6highlight((-x+32000))=272000 Plug in y=-x+32000 into the second equation. In other words, replace each y with -x+32000. Notice we've eliminated the y variables. So we now have a simple equation with one unknown.

14x+(6)(-1)x+(6)(32000)=272000 Distribute 6 to -x+32000

14x-6x+192000=272000 Multiply

8x+192000=272000 Combine like terms on the left side

8x=272000-192000Subtract 192000 from both sides

8x=80000 Combine like terms on the right side

x=(80000)/(8) Divide both sides by 8 to isolate x

x=10000 Divide

-----------------First Answer------------------------------

So the first part of our answer is: x=10000

Since we know that x=10000 we can plug it into the equation y=-x+32000 (remember we previously solved for y in the first equation).

y=-x+32000 Start with the equation where y was previously isolated.

y=-(10000)+32000 Plug in x=10000

y=-10000+32000 Multiply

y=22000 Combine like terms

-----------------Second Answer------------------------------

So the second part of our answer is: y=22000

-----------------Summary------------------------------

So our answers are:

x=10000 and y=22000

Which means that 10,000 reserved tickets were sold and 22,000 general admission tickets were sold.

-----------------------------
GM = price of magazines
MU = price of mugs
RM = price of magnets
4GM + 3MU = 870
5GM + 2MU + 3RM = 1235
2GM + 4MU + 4RM = 1550
-------------
It's 3 eqns in 3 unknowns.
There are several ways to solve this. I have an Excel sheet that does determinants, so I'll use that.
| 4 3 0 870 |
| 5 2 3 1235 | = 0
| 2 4 4 1550 |
Det = 4*(8-12) - 3*(20-6) = -16 - 42
Det = -58
Det*GM = 3*(3*1550 - 4*1235) + 870*(2*4-4*3)
Det*GM = 3*(-290) + 870*(-4)
Det*GM = -4350
GM = -4350/(-58)
GM = 75 (cents)
-----------
Sub 75 into the 1st eqn to get MU
4GM + 3MU = 870
300 + 3MU = 870
MU = 190
-------------
Sub GM and MU
2GM + 4MU + 4RM = 1550
150 + 760 + 4RM = 1550
4RM = 640
RM = 160
----------
Magazine = $0.75
Mug = $1.90
Magnet = $1.60

Well, there's certainly nothing wrong with your initial equation!
0.08x + 0.05($200,000-x) = $14,800 Perform the indicated multiplication
0.08x+$10,000-0.05x = $14,800 Combine like-terms.
0.03x+$10,000 = $14,800 Subtract $10,000 from both sides.
0.03x = $4,800 Divide both sides by 0.03
x = $160,000 and...
$200,000-x = $200,000-$160,000 = $40,000
So $160,000 was invested at 8% while $40,000 was invested at 5%

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
.08x+.05(200,000-x)=14,800
.08x+10,000-.05x=14,800
.03x=14,800-10,000
.03x=4,800
x=4,800/.03
x=$160,000 invested @ 8%
200,000-160,000=$40,000 invested @ 5%
Proof:
.08*160,000+.05*40,000=14,800
12,800+2,000=14,800
14,800=14,800
Question 169932: This problem is for a project we were given:
Jeremy inherits $200,000 and invests part of the money in bonds with an interest rate of 8%. The remainder of the money is in savings at a 5% rate. What AMOUNT has he invested at EACH RATE if he recieves $14,800 interest for 1 year.?
So far I have the following:
let x= dollars invested at 8%
$200,000-x = dollars invested at 5%.
Equation as .08x+ .05(200,000-x)=$14,800
I know you have to clear the decimal and go from there, but when I tried to solve it I got some funky number.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You have solved a major portion:
let x= dollars invested at 8%
$200,000-x = dollars invested at 5%.
Equation as .08x+ .05(200,000-x)=$14,800
From here 3 more steps..
1. Expand...
0.08x+10000-0.05x=14800
2. Simplify
0.03x=14800-10000=4800
3. Solve
0.03x=4800
x=4800/0.03=160000
So ..Answer
dollars invested at 8%=160000
dollars invested at 5%=40000

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x= amount inv. @ 12%
So, 600000-x=amount inv. @ 8%
It follows:
0.12x+0.08(600000-x)=52000, EQN 1
0.12x+48000-0.08x=52000
0.04x=52000-48000=4000
cross(0.04)x/cross(0.04)=cross(4000)100000/cross(0.04)
x=100,000 ---------> amount inv. @ 12%
.
600000-100000=500,000 -------> amount inv.@8%
Let's check using Simple Annual Interest:
I=Prt
I[8]=500000*.08*1=40,000
I[12]=100000*.12*1=12,000
Therefore,I[8]+I[12]=I
40000+12000=52000
52000=52000

Answer by Mathtut(512) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
no, the result is not a 30% discount...why because you are taking 20% on the original price and an addition 10% on the sales price.....if you were taking both discounts on the original price then the answer would be yes.
550000(.2)=110000 so the sales price is 440000(550000-110000) for which we take another 10% off 440000(.1)=44000. so the final sales price is 440000-44000=396000.
the final discount percentage can be found by taking the total of discounts 110000+44000=154000 and divide it by the orginal cost 550000
:
154000/550000=.28 or 28% discount

Answer by Mathtut(512) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1.6x=20400....where x is the original cost.
highlight(x=12750) original cost.
remember the markup is 60%..
the way they originally figure the sales price is x+.6x=sales price
........................................1.6x=sales price
that is why you are dividing the sales price(20400) by 1.6 to find original cost

Question 169591: Would you rather have a kilometer of quarters or a kilometer of dimes? (in a straight line, with the heads up). How much better is your choice?
: Would you rather have a kilometer of quarters or a kilometer of dimes? (in a straight line, with the heads up). How much better is your choice?

Answer by gonzo(474) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
i would rather have a kilometer of quarters.
here's why:
in order for me to break even, the diameter of the quarter needs to be 2.5 times the diameter of the dime.
assume the diameter of the quarter is 2.5 and the diameter of the dime is 1.
then 2.5 dimes fit into 1 quarter and i break even.
assume the diameter of the quarter is 3 and the diameter of the dime is 1.
then 3 dimes fit into 1 quarter so i get 30 cents from the dimes and only 25 cents from the quarter.
if the diameter of the quarter is more than 2.5 times the diameter of the dime, then i make more money on the dime.
if the diameter of the quarter is less than 2.5 times the diameter of the dime, then i make more money on the quarter.
the actual diameter of a quarter is 24.26 mm.
the actual diameter of a dime is 17.91 mm.
the ratio is less than 2.5 so the quarter is a better deal since i can only fit 24.26 / 17.91 = 1.35 dimes into a quarter (length only).
this proves out in actual practice.
1 km is equal to 1 million mm
1 million mm / 24.26 = 41220 quarters * .25 = $10,305.
1 million mm / 17.91 = 55835 dimes * .10 = $5,583.
quarters win by a long shot.
the assumption here is that they are lying on their tail side so the thickness of the coin is not a factor.
my choice is a lot better.
$10,305 for the quarters versus $5,583 for the dimes.
Question 169591: Would you rather have a kilometer of quarters or a kilometer of dimes? (in a straight line, with the heads up). How much better is your choice?

Answer by Mathtut(512) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
diameter of a quarter is 24.26 mm
diameter of a dime is 17.91 mm
1 km equals 1000000 milimeters
so for quarters divide 1000000/24.26=41220
.......dimes divide 1000000/17.91=55834
41220 multiplied by .25=$10305
55834 multiplied by .10=$5583
almost twice as money in quarters....I think I would choose quarters..lol
interestingly enough if you stacked both 1 kilometer high you would still end up with almost twice the value in quarters.

OK, Let x=cost per pound
Total weight of candy(lbs)=2+6=8 lb
Total cost of candy=2*$4.00+6*$5.00=$38
So, our equation to solve is:
8*x=$38 divide each side by 8
(Note: What we have here is total number of pounds(8) time the cost per pound(x)= total cost($38).)
x=$4.75 cost per pound of the mixture
2*$4.00 + 6* $5.00=8*$4.75
$38=$38
