Change both to improper fractions, multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator:
40*8 + 3 = 323/8
4*4 + 1 = 17/4
Now we have:
323%2F8 divided by 17%2F4
Invert the dividing fraction and multiply
323%2F8 * 4%2F17
cancel 4 into 8
323%2F2 * 1%2F17 = 323%2F34
Divide 323 by 34 using long division: 9, remainder 17, so we have
917%2F34 reduce the fraction to 91%2F2
