Question 127508: I am having trouble simplying the following. I have come up with two solutions and need help to see if I am on the right track. Thanks in advance for your help.
Simplify: 2y^2-4/5y-y+3y^2
Solution #1:
= (2y^2+3y^2)+(-4/5-1)y
= 5y^2+(-4/5-5/5)y
= 5y^2-9/5y
Solution #2:
= (2y^2)^5-(4/5y)^5-(y)^5+(3y^2)^5
= 32y^2-4y-5y+243y^2
= 275y^2-9y
= y(275y-9)

Question 128911: Megan and Joe rowed out to where a pole was in a lake to get a better look.
after getting an up-close look they returned to shore.
they found a local resident and asked him about the pole.
they were told that one-half of the pole was lodged in the ground,
another one-third of it was covered by water, and 11 feet of the pole
is sticking out of the water. what is the total length of the pole in feet?
i am in grade 4 and stuck??

10 5/10
8 2/10
Can this be explained how the answer is suppose to be solved too?
