You can put this solution on YOUR website!
1 5/16 - 2/3=
first, convert mixed fractions to fraction form 1 5/16=21%2F16, then find the LCD (lowest common denominator)
since 48 is the smallest number divisible by both 16 and 3, that will be the new denominator. To convert the fractions, find what needs to be done to the denominator (the bottom of the fraction)to turn it into the LCD and do the same thing to the numerator (top number).
ie. in 21%2F16, 16 is the denominator. To turn 16 into 48 you need to multiply 16 by 3. Since you are multiplying the denominator by 3, you *must* multiply the numerator by the same number. 21%2A3%2F16%2A3=63%2F48
Perform the same steps to convert 2%2F3 to a fraction with a denominator of 48 (multiply top and bottom by 16). You'll end up with 32%2F48
This gives you a new equation: 63%2F48-32%2F48
Perform the subtraction on the numerators and carry the denominator over: 31%2F48
If this was not already in lowest terms, you would simplify. Since 31 is a prime number, simplification is not possible.
