Question 923229: Hello,
I'm Hannnah. I think it's so sweet that you guys do this. So, here's my problem: I'm homeschooled and I'm suppossed to be in 8th grade. But I don't know anything about that level of math. There's so many questions that I have to ask. (By the way if you know of a way I could ask questions about other subjects that would be great.) But I know I can only ask one per email... So! How do you figure out whether or not a number/problem is rational or irrantional?

Answer by EdenWolf(517)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hello, Hanna! :)
A Rational Number is basically a real number that can be written as a simple fraction (i.e. as a ratio).
For example...
would be .
would be .
would be .
would be .
Well, what about ? You can't write that as a ratio/simple fraction. Thus, it is called an irrational number. And there are many more such numbers, and because they are not rational. This is why it is called "irrational".
Pi (π) is a famous number that is irrational. It goes on forever.
I hope I helped, please, feel free to ask me if you have any more questions.
