this would be the associative property.
you can group things together with parentheses.
since you always process what is in the innermost set of parentheses, the ones that are grouped would get done first.

your problem says:

(3+c) + 4 = 3 + (c + 4)

in both cases you would get 3+c+4 = 3+c+4

let c equal a number, like 5.

then your problem of:
(3+c) + 4 = 3 + (c + 4) becomes:

(3+5) + 4 = 3 + (5+4) which becomes:

8 + 4 = 3 + 9 which becomes:

12 = 12

if it's all addition, you can group them any way you wish.

it's called the associative property because you associate groups of items together.
