Some numbers just cannot be expressed as a whole number divided by another whole number.
Any whole number divided by another whole number will produce either a terminating digit, or a repeating pattern of digits. Try a few examples yourself and see. Pick any two whole numbers; divide one of them by the other (you should first be comfortable with long division). Either the quotient terminates, or gives repeating digit pattern. These are RATIONAL NUMBERS.
Some IRRATIONAL numbers, which cannot be written as the quotient of two whole numbers, are:
