Question 502970: i am having issues figuring out what irrational numbers are. I have a list of numbers and i need to figure out which ones are irrational,
0. 0.4, -square root of 3, square root of 16, and -2 2/3, -pie, 6.9.
i just want to know how to solve it. i looked it up but i dont understand it. thanks

Answer by jrb1965(16)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
A rational number can be written as a "ratio" of two numbers, or more plainly as a simple fraction so
0 = 0/1
0.4 = 4/10
= 4/1
2 2/3 = 8/3
6.9 = 69/10
those are all rational
and pi cannot be written as ratios, so they are irrational
Hope that helps
