Question 342514: I need to know how to name the set or sets of numbers that each real number belongs to. I don't really know how to classify it. How would I know if it is an integer, whole number, real number, rational or irrational number and what is a natural number? And I am using square roots with these so the first question is negative square root of 20. So how do I classify that? For my answer I put integer, rational, and real number, but I don't even know what they mean.

The number is a real number and it is an irrational number.

Here are some quick definitions:

Integer: Whole number (ie number with no decimal parts).

Natural number: Any whole number that is positive and not zero (eg: 1, 2, 3, 4...)

Rational Number: Number that can be written as a fraction of two integers.

Irrational Number: A number that CANNOT be written as a fraction of two integers.

Real Number: At the moment, it's pretty much any number you can think of. So every number is a real number (for now). You'll find on later in algebra that there are other types of numbers that are not real numbers.
