It started out with a pie eating contest and someone ate the final e. So they were measuring the pie's circumference and found the e. Back then they thought that pie are round but they then learned that pi*r^2.
So they had much larger area to look for the e.
They eventually found the e but it was stuck in logarithms. Many people thought it was unnatural but the courts decided it was a natural logarithm.
