When you work with square roots, the sooner you learn the perfect squares (at least up to 100 or 144) the better. Here's a list that we can use to figure out problems like this. (Once you know your perfect squares this can all be done in your head.)

The logic we use on problems like these goes like this: Since is between and (the left sides of two consecutive equations above), it will be between 1 and 2 (the rights sides of those equations).

So for , since it is between and , it must be between 10 and 11. Using similar logic, will be between 3 and 4. For , it will be between -3 and -4.
