Question 245913: This is in my text and I have tried to solve problem listed below. I asking the on how to solve. Someone else did it a different way but confusing. It say's to complete each ordered pair so that it satisfies the given equation.
y = 2x - 5: (8, ), (-1, ), (- ,-1)
I tried steps but get confused and someone else say's its incorrect. I could use some guidance.

Ordered pairs are called that because the two coordinates are always in a certain order. If you have an equation in and , then the ordered pair is constructed

So, when you have a partial ordered pair like , since the 8 is in the first position, you know that the 8 represents the value of . Therefore, you can substitute the value 8 in place of in the equation and then do the arithmetic to calculate the value of , which, in this case, is the missing value in your partial ordered pair.

For the one where the value is the missing value, it works exactly the same way except that you will substitute the known value and then calculate the unknown value of .

You still get to do your own arithmetic.

Answer by rfer(16322)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
y=2x-5
y=2(8)-5
y=11
(8,11)
--------------
y=2(-1)-5
y=-7
(-1,-7)
-------------
y=2x-5
-1=2x-5
2x=4
x=2
(2,-1)

complete each ordered pair so that it satisfies the given equation.
y = 2x - 5: (8, ), (-1, ), (- ,-1)
---
(8,?): ? = 2*8-5 = 16-5 = 11
-----------------------------
(-1,?): ? = 2*-1-5 = -2-5 = -7
-----------------------------
(?,-1): -1 = 2*?-5 ; 4 = 2*? ; ? = 2
