Let smaller number be "x"
Then next consecutive number is "x+1"
The sum of the two is 2x+1
"nine more than eight times the smaller" is 8x+9
EQUATION:
2x+1 = 8x+9
-6x=8
x= -4/3
x+1 = -4/3+3/3= -1/3

And the question is...? What are the two numbers??
Let x = the smaller number then the next consecutive number is x+1. So, from the problem description:
x + (x+1) = 8x + 9 Simplify and solve for x.
2x + 1 = 8x + 9 Subtract 2x from both sides of the equation.
1 = 6x + 9 Subtract 9 from both sides.
-8 = 6x Divide both sides by 6.

This is the smaller number.
This is the next consecutive number.
