Question 177425: I am having trouble finding value of these problems, I have not been in a classroom for 22 years and only recently went back to school, I never learned this type of math!! I do get the general concept, but I am still struggling because we have to break down each problem and get a single diget or more with no fraction in the answer, here is an example of one that was done on the chalkboard:
(7-3)+(2+5):7 (the : is divide)
=4+7:7
=4+1
=5 (the answer)

your talking about order of operations: we need them so everyone comes up with the same answers. Mathematicians could have come up with something different then what we all follow today. These are simply rules that we all follow for the sake of consistency. Take a look at this link and see if it doesnt help you. Remember no matter what the operation it always works from left to right, and then the next operation or operations are dealt with and those are also handled from left to right

Order of Operations is what you are trying to learn. Use the neumonic device to help choose operation precedence; which gets done first:
P.E.M.D.A.S
From first to last:
Parentheses
Exponentiation
Multiplication
Division
Addition
Subtraction
