Question 140860: could you tell me which ones of these are integers? some of them have a square root sign and I don't know how to make that on the computer so I'll do my best.
-12, square root 7, -7/3, square root 8 with a little 3 at the top, 0, 9, 4 2/3, square root 25, -square root 14, square root 5 with a little 5 at the top,square root 4 with a little 3 at the top,5/7
If you could also tell me why they are integers, that would help me alot.Thank you in advance for your help, because I'm an older student and I have found it harder to go back to school in your late thirties, but I know it will be worth it.
Have a great day! Elle

The set of Counting Numbers is: 1, 2, 3, ...
Add zero and you have the Whole Numbers: 0, 1, 2, 3, ...
Add the negative whole numbers and you have integers: ...-3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, ...

Any number that is a fraction that cannot be reduced to a whole number is not an integer. Also any number that cannot be expressed as the quotient of two integers and is therefore irrational is not an integer. For example the square root of anything that is not a perfect square (1, 4, 9, 16, ...), is irrational.

Hint: square root 8 with a little 3 at the top means "cube root of 8", so your question is, is there an integer x such that x times x times x = 8? If there is, is an integer, otherwise not.
