You got the answer 1, so let's check it out. One third of 1 is , One half of 1 is , 35 less than is . and are not the same thing, so your answer cannot be correct. Let's start over from the beginning.

A number: x
One third of the number:
Half of the number
35 less than half of the number:

One third of a number is (and the is here means equals) 35 less than half of the same number, so:

Multiply both sides of the equation by 3:

Multiply both sides of the equation by 2:

Add -3x to both sides:

Multiply both sides of the equation by -1:

Check:
One third of 210 is . One half of 210 is and 35 less than that is . Answer checks
