We set this up this way:

Now cross-multiply and solve
4(5+x) = 3(11+x)
20 + 4x = 33 + 3x
x = 13

What number must be added to both the numerator and the denominator of 5/11 to produce a fraction equivalent to 3/4?
----------
Add x
(5+x)/(11+x) = 3/4
Cross multiply
4(x+5) = 3(x+11)
4x+20 = 3x+33
x = 13
