rational number: any number that can be expressed a ratio (ie fraction) of 2 whole numbers. Examples of rational numbers are 2/3, 2, 1/2, etc.

irrational number: any number that cannot be expressed as a fraction of two whole numbers. Examples of irrational numbers are sqrt(2)/3 ( the sqrt(2) cannot be expressed as a fraction of two whole numbers), sqrt(11), etc.
