Question 176902: Please help. Here is one that says solve and then find the x intercept.
3x^2-5x-11=0
When I used the quadratic equation I came up with an answer of
5+square root of 157 divided by 6 AND 5-square root of 157 divided by 6.
Then when I found the x intercept my answers were x=5/6 and y=-107/12.
This does not seem right to me. Is it? Thank you

Question 176899: Please help with this one...the directions are to find the vertex, the line of symmetry, the minimum and maximum value of the quadratic equation and then graph it. I know that once I get the vertex, I can find the rest. I have solved it close to the end, but I am not sure where to go from here...
f(x)=-2x^2+2x+7
I used the equation -b+- the square root of b^2-4ac divided by 2a
I got to -2+-the square root of 60 divided by 4. Now I am stuck...thank you for the help.

Question 177148: Could you please help me in understanding this problem. I have attempted to use the formulas x=-b/2a and 4ac-b^2/4a. However the answers I have received to not seem to fit. Am I not supposed to use that formula? There are several parts to this problem a-i and I am nervous to start off with the wrong answer as it would mean that could affect all the answers that come after part a. Any help you can give me will be very much appreciated.
The problem:
1. Suppose you are an event coordinator for a large performance theater. One of the hottest new Broadway musicals has started to tour, and your city is the first stop on the tour. You need to supply information about projected ticket sales to the box office manager. The box office manager uses this information to anticipate staffing needs until the tickets sell out. You provide the manager with a quadratic equation that models the expected number of ticket sales for each day x. ( x=1 is the day tickets go on sale).
Tickets =-0.2x^2+12x+11
a. Does the graph of this equation open up or down? How did you determine this?

Question 177184: Thank you for your quick response. I understood your direction; however I am still confused on how to go any further with this problem. As I said, it has several parts. I cannot find a comparable example in my book to help me understand the next steps. I have again tried to understand both of these questions but am not sure where to begin. Could you please help me in understanding what I should do in order to determine the correct answers? Any help you can give me will be very much appreciated.

b. Describe what happens to the tickets sales as time passes?
c. Use the quadratic equation to determine the last day that tickets will be sold. (Note: Write your answer in terms of the number of days after ticket sales begin.)

Question 177304: The approximate distance it takes to stop a car, based on the speed the car is travelling, is given in theh following chart:
Miles Per Hour / Stopping Distance (ft)
25 / 62
35 / 106
45 / 161
50 / 195
55 / 228
65 / 306
a- find the quadratic function based on the stopping distance for 55 mph and 65 mph and the fact that at 0 mph the stopping distance is 0 ft.
b- use that equation to predict the stopping distances for 55 mph and 65 mph and compare them with the distances given in the chart.
c- if the equation continues to be valid for higher speeds, how many feet would it take to stop a drag racer that reaches a speed of 230 mph?
