Question 486647: I'm using the quadratic formula to solve:
3x=1-1/x
I multiplied the x out and got: 3x^2=x-1
I put it in standard form and came up with: 3x^2-x+1
a=3 b=-1 c=1
when I work out the equation I get -11 under the radical which would mean there is no real solution.
did I work out the problem correctly?

Question 486294: Give exact and approximate solutions to three decimal places:
y^2-2y+1=100

Question 486964: Please help!! I'm lost with this one!! Suppose you are an event coordinator for a large performance theater. One of the hottest new Broadway musicals has started to tour and your city is the first stop on the tour. You need to supply information about projected ticket sales to the box office manager. The box office manager uses this information to anticipate staffing needs until the tickets sell out. You provide the manager with a quadratic equation that models the expected number of ticket sales for each day x. ( is the day tickets go on sale).
Tickets = -x2 + 5x + 29 = 0
a. Does the graph of this equation open up or down? How did you determine this?
b. Describe what happens to the tickets sales as time passes.
c. Use the quadratic equation to determine the last day that tickets will be sold.
Note. Write your answer in terms of the number of days after ticket sales begin.
d. Will tickets peak or be at a low during the middle of the sale? How do you know?
e. After how many days will the peak or low occur?
f. How many tickets will be sold on the day when the peak or low occurs?
g. What is the point of the vertex? How does this number relate to your answers in parts e. and f?
h. How many solutions are there to the equation -x2 + 5x + 29 = 0? How do you know?

Step #1
Move the constant term to the right side of the equation.
The constant term is - 13
X2 - 2x = 13
Step #2
Multiply each term in the equation by four times the coefficient of the term x
4x2 - (2x4 =) 8 = (13 x 4 =) 52
4x2 - 8 = 52
Step #3
Square the coefficient of the original x term and add it to both sides o the equation
Original Coefficient = 2 (2 squared =) 4
4x2 - 8 + 4 = 52 + 4
4x2 - 8 + 4 = 56
Step # 4
Take the square root of both sides
4x2 - 8 + 4 = 56

Question 487150: We are trying to Factor the equation 2x^4 - 4x^3 + 8x^2. We factor out 2x^2 out. 2x^2(x^2 - 2x + 4) We then input into the quadratic equation (-(-2) +/- sqroot of -2^2 - 4(1)(4)) / 2(1). That give us (2 +/- sqroot -12) / 2. should be able to reduce that to 1 +/- (sqroot 3)i. So now we need to understand how to write the answer. Would it be 2x^2(x - (1 + [sqroot 3]i)(x + (1 + [sqroot 3]i)?? Some how this just does not appear to me to be the correct answer.
