Question 383609: Hi
Stuck on this, can someone please help
The total surface area S of a closed cone of base radius r cm and perpendicular height h cm is given byS = pir^2 + pi r sqrt(r^2 + h^2). If r and h are each increasing at the rate of 0.25 cm s^-1, find the rate at which S is increasing at the instantwhen r = 3 and h = 4.

Question 383758: Hi, Stuck here with this particular problem, please can somebody help
The equation governing the buckling load P of a strut with one end fixed and the other end simply supported is given by tan (Mu)L = (Mu)L where (Mu) = Sqrt (P/EI), L the length of the strut and EI the flexural rigidity of the strut.
By writing x = (Mu)L, solve the equation tan x = x using three iterations of the Newton-Raphson method, taking
an initial approximation x0 = 4.5

Question 384497: The algebraic relation d=0.0056s^2+0.14s models the relation between a vehicle's stopping distance d, in meters, and its speed s, in kilometers per hour. What is the fastest you could drive and still be able to stop within 80m? What is the stopping distance for a car travelling at 120km/h? Estimate the length of an average car. How many cars lengths does the stopping distance in (b) correspond to?

Question 385173: Getting lost in completing the square for 2x^2+5x+11=0
I am able to get to 2x^2+5x=-11 then do I divide everything by 2? That would give me a really complicated fraction of x^2+5x/2=-11/2 then I am lost...

Question 385217: i'm learning polynomials and such in class and a question came up in one of my group tests. i asked someone else for help and they showed me how to do it but i don't get how to get from the equation to the answer.
i do not understand how 2w^2+11w=84 gets to whatever the weird answer was. i do not understand how it is a quadratic equation and how to simplify it...please help and thanks so much.
PS. the problem i had on my group test was this:
The length of a picture is one inch less than twice its width. the frame around the picture has a uniform width of two inches and an area of 96 square inches. what are the dimensions of the picture?
i did the equation like this:
(2w+3)(w+4)=96
which simplified to:
2w^2+11w=84
