Question 14211: i'm in pre-calculus and our teacher gave us an extra credit problem. It reads:
Derive the quadratic formula. (Hint: Solve the general quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c=0 but a cannot = 0)

Question 14442: In school i lerned how to slove the quadratic equations by spliting it into seperate fractions . I never learned to slove the way they slove it on www.algebra.com . My question is there a section in this site to pratice questions my way or can you teach me to learn the way they slove it on this site

Question 14811: A man has a goat, a wolf, and a head of cabbage. He comes to a river and must bring these three things across to the other side. The boat can only take the man plus either the goat, wolf, or cabbage. There is another problem. If the cabbage is left with the goat, the goat will eat the cabbage. If the wolf is left with the goat, the goat will be devoured. How can he transport the wolf, goat, and cabbage to the other side? Your answer should be a series of steps.

Question 15100: Pelipa is adding a second story to her house. The addition is rectangular, and the outside dimensions of the walls are 18 feet (east to west) and 28 feet(north to south). The roof will have a 4-12 slope with the ridge running north and south. There will be a 9 inch overhang on all sides of the roof. Pelipa needs to order shigles now so that they will be on the job site when she is ready for them. The roofing company waants to know how many squares of shingles she will need.
Deal with this qustion for Pelipa. There may be some terms and concepts in the information given that you will need to research. Make careful drawings and calculatons. Explain how you arive at your estimate

Question 15188: When solving a rational equation, why it is OK to remove the denominator by multiplying both sides by the LCD and why can you not do the same operation when simplifying a rational expression or adding rational expressions?
The only answere that I have come up with so far is the one is an expression and one is an equation. With the equation we are solving for a variable, and with an expression we are simplyfying and then doing what is required ie, add, subtract, multiple or divide. Is there more to this question that I am missing?

The problem is: 10x^2 - 3x - 4 = 0
how do i figure out x without doing the whole quadratic equation?
I know the answer to factoring is (2x + 1) (5x - 4). how do you get that??

Question 15590: How do you find the quadratic equation of a parabola with a vertex of (8, 102), a y-intercept of (0, 98.6) and a zero of (16,0)? I have tried to solve the equation -(b/2a) =8, but that hasn't worked out well. I've also tried to solve for a or b since I know that c is equal to 98.6, but so far I cannot get the right equation. All I have is that 64a + 8b + 98.6 = 102 and 256a + 16b + 98.6 = 0. I know a is a negative number, but that is the only other information I have.

4x^2 + 8x + 13 x^2 = 3
3x^2 + 8x + 13 = 3
3x^2 + 8x + 10 = 0
A = 3
B = 8
C = 10
8^2 4*3*10 = -56
No real solution.
