So I know that volume of a rectangle is A=lwh and that I probably need to find out the perimeter to get the sides? And then I think there's going to be an 8x used in there for all the squares they're taking out? (x^4-1) (x^2-2) (x^2+2) Did I factor these correctly?
What would be my next step? Or did I miss a step?
I am totally lost with this problem. I am also having problems factoring terms that have higher than one as it's coefficient. Also, numbers with powers due to the zero product property being used.

Question 645592: I'm working on quadratic equations with one variable using the quadratic formula. The step I am stuck on involves square roots. The step is as follows: y = -4 plus or minus the square root of -24 over (divided by) 4. I know that the answer (the software I use allows me to see the solution)is y = -4 plus or minus 2 square root of 6 i over 4. What I don't get is where the 2 in front of the square root symbol comes from. I have encountered a few of these problems and cannot work the solution out on my own.
