y = -x^2 has a maximum value of 0 at x = 0.
In general, if a quadratic is of the form y = ax^2 + bx + c where a is nonzero, then if a > 0, the quadratic has a minimum value for y, and if a < 0, the quadratic has a maximum value. This can easily be seen by completing the square, or using calculus, or many other methods.

the vertex form of a Parabola opening up(a>0) or down(a<0),
where(h,k) is the vertex and x = h is the Line of Symmetry
...for Ex
y = -(x-2)^2 + 3 would Open downward V(2,3)max
