Question 855602: If the length of one side of a square garden is increased by 3ft and the length of an adjacent side is increased by 2ft the area of the garden increases to 72 square ft. What is the length of a side of the original garden?
Answer by JulietG(1812) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
(L+3) * (L+2) = 72
Since it's a square garden, we need only find one length.
What are the factors of 72? (area = length * width)
You're looking for factors that are 1 apart since both sides (L+2)(L+3)
1,72
2,36
3,24
4,18
6,12
8,9
If you use factors 8 and 9 (or 9,8), you can see that L = 6
.
That's the long way :-), but it makes more sense.
You can also take the area and divide by 3 * 2 (the +2 and +3), then divide by 2L
