The length of a poster is 10cm longer than its width. If the area of the poster is 1200cm2, what is the width of the poster?

let's the length of a poster be and the width
the area is .......eq.1
if the length is longer than its width, then
.........eq.2
If the area of the poster is , then from eq.1
......substitute from eq.2
.....solve for to find the width of the poster

....use quadratic formula




....we need only positive solution because the width cannot be negative
