Replace the < relational operator with = and solve the resulting quadratic equation. Plot the two zeros (you are guaranteed to have two separate and distinct zeros for this problem because the signs on the lead coefficient and the constant term are opposite) on the number line dividing the number line into three intervals, minus infinity to the smaller zero, the smaller zero to the larger zero, and the larger zero to infinity.

Select a value that is NOT one of the zeros from each of the three intervals and evaluate the original inequality at each of the three values. You will either get a - + - or a + - + result. In the first case, the solution set is the union (or disjunction, as the answers indicate) of the two outer intervals. In the second case, the solution set is the middle interval.
