Question 74838: I need to convert this into a quadratic equation. I can get the correct answer, I just can't figure out how to write a quadratic equation that works.

1. A designer, attempting to arrange the characters of his artwork in the form of a square grid with equal number of rows and columns, found that 24 characters were left out. When he tried to add one more row and column, he found that he was short of 25 characters. Can you find the number of characters used by the designer?

Answer by scott8148(6628)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let x equal the number of rows of the original grid. Let y equal the number of characters.

and so

subtracting from both sides and adding 24 to both sides gives 48=2x or x=24. This means y=600

I'm not sure about the quadratic equation that you need but this solution does use a second order equation
