Question 678888: In this problem, I am supposed to:
(a) using a graphing calculator to graph the equation
(b) use the graph to approximate any x-intercepts of the graph
(c) set y=0 and solve the resulting equation
(d) compare the result of part (c) with the x-intercepts of the graph.
For part (a) I got the x-intercepts -1 and -5.
When I did part (c) I got -1, but I have no idea how to get the -5...
How do you solve for x twice??

Answer by pmatei(79)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You never said what function you have. Thus nobody can tell you what to do exactly.
From your answer to part (a) I expect that you could factor your function into a form like:

If so, then when you replace y with zero, you have a multiplication of 3 factors that equals zero. As C is a non-zero number, remain only 2 factors that can be zero: either , or .
