i have to find the coordinates of the vertex of y=3.5x^+2x-8
I assume that 3.5x^2, correct?
To find the coordinates for the vertex, we have to first find the "x" coordinate using the formula x = -b/2a and then substitutes that x value for x in the equation and sovle for "y".
------------------------------------------------------------
y(x)=ax^2 + bx + c ===>y = 3.5x^2+2x-8
a= 3.5,b=2,c=-8
x=-b/2a==>-(2)/2(3.5)= (-2)/7
x=-2/7
So we have the x coordinate of negative 2/7. Let's find the y value.
y(-2/7)=3.5(-2/7)^2+2(-2/7)-8
y(-2/7)=-58/7
y=-58/7
Solution: Vertex coordinate is (-2/7,-58/7)
And of course we know that the parabola opens upward because "a" or 3.5 is greater than 0.
Hope this help.
