3x^2-14x-24 is a polynomial
but
3x^2-14x-24=0 is an equation
comparing this with general quadratic equation ax^2+bx+c=0 we get
a=3, b=-14, c=-24
you can now solve it by using the formula but I prefer to use 'spliting the middle term' method
using this method, the given equation can be written as

3x can be taken out as common from first two terms and 4 from the last two,so the equation becomes

taking (x-6) common from the two terms,we get
(x-6)(3x+4)=0
Now either (x-6)=0, OR (3x+4)=0
solving these equations,
either x=6 OR x=-4/3
