Question 5886: Factor 3y^2-8y+4
I am using the decomposition method. I am only stuck on step 6 of the question...the two factors.
This is what I have so far...
-6, -2
3y^2-6y-2y+4
3y(y-2)-2(y-2)
...the answer book says that the two factors are:
(3y-2) (y-2)
Why is this so?

Answer by Abbey(339)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!

If we were looking at the problem:
3y(x)-2(x), we would immediately recognize that we could factor out the x, and be left with:
(x)(3y-2)

your solution is missing this next step. You are correct up to here:

Now factor out the (y-2):
