Daren,
1. Put the two equations in the same format. In this case, you can skip this step because it is already done.
2. Make it so that, if the equations were added together, one of the variables have opposite coefficients and would cancel out. Since 2x and -2x already fulfill these requirements (if added together, the sum is 0), you can skip this step as well.
3. Add the two equations.
y = 2x - 4
y = -2x + 4
2y = 0
4. Solve for the variable that is not canceled out (in this case, y).
2y = 0
Divide both sides by 2: y = 0
5. Solve for the other variable by plugging this value into either one of the original equations.
y = 2x - 4
0 = 2x - 4
Add 4 to both sides of the equation: 4 = 2x
Divide everything by 2: 2 = x
