Question 541158: I need help solving this problem I have been working on it for awhile and I am stuck. A wire is 78ft long. It is attached to the top of a 75 foot cell phone tower. How far is it from the base of the pole to the point where the wire is attached to the ground? I know that the equation to solve the problem is 75^2+x^2=78^2, but I dont know tho proceed from here. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

You are working with a right triangle with one leg=75 ft (the tower) and the hypotenuse=78 ft
(the wire). The remaining leg=x (distance from base of pole to where wire is attached to grd)
According to the Pythagorean Theorem, the sum of the squares of the two legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse:
75^2+x^2=78^2
x^2=78^2-75^2=6084-5625=459
x=√459≈21.42
ans:
distance from base of pole to where wire is attached to grd≈21.42 ft
