Are you familiar with FOIL method of expanding products of binomials? If not, then resubmit this question, and I'll try another method.
If you understand the FOIL menthod, then the answer has to be in the form:
(2x - ____)(x - ____), where the product of the numbers on the blank lines is 36.
Also, the numbers have to be such that when you multiply the OUTER times OUTER and INNER times INNER, you end up with a sum of 27x.
All the combinations of 36 are listed below:
1*36
2*18
3*12
4*9
6*6
Because the middle term is odd, you can't have an even times even number. This eliminates teh 2*18 and the 6 * 6 combinations. After some trial and error, the one that works is the 3*12 combination:
(2x - 3)(x - 12), since the outer times outer is -24x, the inner times inner is -3x, and that adds up to -27x.
So, you have it factored into
(2x-3)(x-12) = 0
Set each factor equal to zero, and solve for x.
(2x-3)(x-12) = 0
2x - 3 = 0
2x = 3
x-12= 0
x= 12
Final answer:
